Fort A.P. Hill is located within the boundaries of Caroline County, a largely rural county of great natural beauty, dotted with farms, woodlands and waters. Caroline County is located in the northeastern portion of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Situated along the I-95 corridor, Caroline sits roughly midway between Richmond and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.  The county has 549 square miles of land.

The Town of Bowling Green, located approximately in the center of the county, serves as the county seat. Bowling Green is 72 miles south of Washington, D.C., 20 miles south of Fredericksburg, 108 miles southeast of Baltimore, Md., and 35 miles north of Richmond. It serves as the professional and service hub of Caroline County and is the community located closest to Fort A.P. Hill’s main entrance and permanent staff office complex. The county’s smaller incorporated town, Port Royal, lies approximately 11 miles northeast of Bowling Green, on the Rappahannock River.


Direction to Fort A.P. Hill traveling from the North via I-95

*   Take Interstate 95 south to exit 126 (FREDERICKSBURG/MASSAPONAX AREA).
*   Turn right off of Exit 126 onto Route 1.
*   Go approximately 1 mile - at third stoplight turn left onto Route 17 (you should see the sign for Fort
     A.P. Hill just before the third light).
*   Go approximately 6 miles until you come to the intersection of Routes 17 and 2 (there will be a stop
     light).
*   Turn right onto Route 2 South and go about 14 miles until you come to the stoplight in Bowling
     Green (intersection of Routes 2 and 301).
*   Turn left at the light and proceed to U.S. 301. Turn left (north) onto U.S. 301 at the second stop
     sign...you will soon see two small motels and a restaurant on your right...the Fort A.P. Hill main
     entrance is just a bit further on your left.

Direction to Fort A.P. Hill traveling from the South via I-95

*   Take Interstate 95 north to Exit 104 (Carmel Church/Bowling Green).
*   Get on Route 207 toward Bowling Green. A sign on the exit ramp points to Fort A.P. Hill.
*   At approximately 10 miles, you will want to get on Route 301 toward Port Royal. Again signs point
    the way to A.P. Hill.
*   Go approximately 3 miles and the main entrance to Fort A.P. Hill is on the left.


The retreat will use the Cabins on Bullocks Pond.  Each cabin holds has three bedrooms, one full bath with laundry facilities, a living room and kitchen area.  For retreat purposes, there will be no more than 5 people per cabin. There are john boats and canoes available for rent.  Feel free to bring a bicycle

Please be aware that this is a military post and all vehicles will be checked.  Don't let that fool you though, this is a place where nature thrives in all her glory.  You will see many woodland creatures and wonderful bird life in these natural surrounding.
